I don't know if you saw earlier email from Allison, but she
pointed out that the number space extends to 65535 in the
IANA registry
(http://www.iana.org/assignments/dns-parameters/dns-parameters.xhtml#dns-parameters-6).


But you're right that the version number is only 8 bits.
